You’ve noticed that too.

How many of these things have you done?!?!?!?

1. Set foot on each of the seven continents. Antarctica might be a tough one, but once you’ve reached all seven you can truly call yourself a world traveler.

2. Cross a country on a bicycle. A bicycle tour takes some planning, but it beats being separated from a country though a passenger-side window.

3. Ride something bigger than a horse. Trekking through the jungle on the back of a two story tall elephant will surely be something you remember forever.

4. Live like a local for a month. The experience of visiting native peoples will give you way more insight into another way of life than two years hopping from one backpacker ghetto to the next.

5. Visit a “real” blues bar in Chicago. What better way to leave music’s commercialism behind and find the soul of the blues?

6. Learn another language. This is definitely a weighty and time-consuming proposition, but there are plenty of resources out there to ease the process.

7. Go heli-skiing. The access to snow and terrain via heli is different (read: better) that anything else you’ll ever experience.

8. Travel India by train. With its extensive rail network, this mode of transport is the best way to see one of the world’s most colorful and diverse countries.

9. Climb one of the world’s Seven Summits. Climbing mountains is not for the faint-hearted, but everyone has had a dream of standing atop one.

10. Dive with a whale shark. Swimming with these gentle giants is among the most powerful wilderness experiences in the world.

11. Participate in a Carnival parade in Brazil. You haven’t had a good night out until you’ve been to the biggest party in a nation of big parties.

12. Dance Tango in Argentina.

13. Surf. It’s not about being a ripper but just catching waves.

14. SCUBA in the Great Barrier Reef. The largest coral reef in the world is a must for dive enthusiasts. It is the world’s most unique aquatic environment.

15. Publish an article about your travels. Part of traveling is sharing your experiences with others. Plus, getting published might be easier than you think.

16. Volunteer abroad for a month.

17. Follow in the footsteps of your favorite travel book. What better guide than a book that inspired you to travel in the first place?

18. Take a bush plane ride into Africa’s interior. These lightly visited regions are filled with unique cultures and diverse wildlife.

19. Cross a glacier on foot. Traversing these fast-disappearing natural wonders is an adventure that future generations might not be able to experience.

20. Visit the source of one of the world’s great rivers. Great rivers, like the Nile, have humble beginnings.

21. Climb an active volcano.

22. Buy a boat and learn to sail. Before the Brothers Wright, everyone traveled by wind power. It’s still the most sustainable way to travel there is.

23. Follow your food from field to table. Most people in the world still eat what they have picked with their own hands. Why not get back to these basics?

24. Bathe in the Ganges. What better way to experience the spiritual heart of India?

25. Travel around the world. Sure, you could do this without ever setting foot outside of planes and airports, but few people ever truly traverse the entire globe. Round the world tickets are great for budget-minded wanderers.

26. Photograph an endangered species. Aside from an image you can keep for a lifetime, it will remind you, and others, how fragile life can be.

27. Participate in Burning Man . As they say: “Trying to explain Burning Man to someone who has never been is like trying to explain color to a blind person.”

28. Spend 24 hours alone in the jungle.

29. Learn how to make a national dish. What is the one and only thing that everyone has in common? Eating.

30. Teach English in a foreign country. Sure, it’s a way to fund your travels, but also the experience of a lifetime.

31. Attend a music festival in another country.

32. Cross a country using only public transportation. See a country the way most of its people do: from the window of a bus, train, or ferry.

33. Spend the night in a storied/historic hotel. You might not even have to leave town to experience a night of classic atmosphere.

34. Attend the Olympics. Whatever you say about the commercialism of the Olympic Games, they are one of the biggest events on the planet.

41. Be in the stands when two rival South American club teams play each other in soccer. Soccer (sorry, football) is a passion for most of the world’s population.

42. Visit the birthplace or gravesite of a cultural icon. Could be Che Guevara or Picasso or Levi Strauss or the guy who invented widgets; anyone you think is important.

43. Find your version of “The Beach.” One of the best travel books ever inspired a generation of backpackers. Why not find your own version of untouched paradise?

When I travel by train anywhere in India?

and I want a tea or coffee it is pre-mixed with sugar I always ask for tea/coffee no sugar, but can’t have. I do not like sugar, sweet things, and what about diabetics who should not take sugar, this is bad for health. If sugar is required why can it not be given seperately or alternatley supply the sugar-frees with hot water to make own. There have been 2 exceptions to this in my past 5 years of train travel India, that being the Shatabdi and Doronto Express trains, where sugar is seperate.

Jim answers:

Given what little I know about the tea-vending services at Indian stations, I would say that the reason why sugar is not given separately is because it would be too difficult to carry around a supply of sugar separately to the tea urn itself. So they just put it all in together.

The Shatabdi is a high-class express, much more like Western trains. That is why the sugar is separate.

This is also a cultural issue. Remember that most people in India are very poor. They are grateful for any kind of refreshment they can get. A poor diabetic in India would probably not have survived long enough to be concerned about the tea on an Indian train. Sad fact, but true.

Jim answers:

See, you could easily get any trains, from all over India to Raxual, which lets you enter Birgunj, The main Entrance of Nepal. From Birgunj, you can get many buses to Kathmandu, mostly opens at 8pm, all the buses are very good, and opens from Ghantaghar and Bus Stand.

Hotel Vishwa is the best Hotel in Birgunj, and Hotel Makalu will also be a good choice.

From Kathmandu, you can easily travel to Pokhara, its awesome place to visit in Nepal.

Prostitution are CONSTANTLY posted in Travel–>India–>Chandigarh and not removed. Why?

I’m sure that everyone has seen the prostitution ads that appear on Yahoo Answers. They appear constantly–every day, many times a day. A friend was involved in an investigation into these ads, and it seems like many of them involve underage/forced prostitutes.

The ads are mainly posted in the Travel–>India–>Chandigarh section, but they appear pretty much everywhere on Yahoo. Click on any country and they’re there. Display recent questions and they’re there.

Every time I see them, I report them immediately. But often, there isn’t even a “report abuse” button on some of the posts, so it is impossible to remove them. And even when ads DO get removed, all information–like a phone number to call and the location of the prostitutes–is still visible in the ad titles, usually for hours. The ad titles are often NOT removed.

Today I saw at least twenty of these ads in a row and some of them had been up for ten hours or more. I could only report about half of them because there was no report button on some of them.

I do not understand why Yahoo allows this to go on. It would be very simple to remove an ENTIRE ad–including the title, immediately. Also, I have never, ever falsely reported a question, yet often when I report these ads, my report is not used. What do I have to do before my reports actually work?

I think that Yahoo should shut down the Chandigarh section if they are not willing to allow users like me to moderate these ads. Or if they’re disorganized enough that not even one Yahoo employee can be bothered to check the Chandigarh section for hours at a time to get rid of these ads.

If you guys at Yahoo do not start doing something about these ads–which very likely exploit kids and that MY kids can see in plain sight when they log on to Yahoo–I am going to publicize this problem. It has gone on for years and nothing has been done about it.
********
Reply:
Actually, like I said, these posts are often not removed. Often there isn’t even a “report abuse” button that can be used to report them. And when I do report them, the posts either stay up or the title (which contains a phone number and the service being offered) stays up!

This has been a problem for YEARS. I am a reliable reporter, and I still don’ have the ability to get the posts removed immediately. When is Yahoo going to do something about this?
*******
Rev, you did not read my note carefully.

These posts are either not removed for many hours or when they ARE removed, the titles–containing phone numbers and all other information–stay up for a long time.

Like I said, this morning I saw at least 20 in a row in the Chandigarh section, and some had been up for over ten hours. I have seen this many times, certainly not just this morning.

And what do you mean by “no need to publicize this problem?” This has been a problem for years and NOTHING has been done about it. It would be very, very easy for Yahoo to remove entire posts, including titles. Clearly, you are a Yahoo employee, making excuses for Yahoo’s failure to act on this.

I have never once made a false report. I have never even received notification that I have made a false report.

It is almost impossible to get in touch with anyone at Yahoo about this. Messages to the feedback addresses are ignored. When will Yahoo finally do something about

Jim answers:

If a paying advertiser reads the A.U.P. He should expect a reasonably honest effort by Yahoo to minimize the chance of being turned into a sponsor of prostitution traffic. That means that when Yahoo gives the pimps a holiday from the A.U.P. They are cheating the paying advertisers.

It depends on what type of ticket you bought in Goa. Some tickets are really cheap with tons of restrictions – so the best way to do is just call BA in Vancouver and find out what type of ticket and how much do you have to pay (if applicable).

BA in US/Canada : 1-800-AIRWAYS or (800) 247-9297

Jim answers:

The cancellation policy is on the Rail Europe website in the FAQ section: http://www.raileurope.com/us/common/rail_terms_and_conditions.htm

“Totally unused point-to-point tickets received by the issuing office prior to the first date of validity are refundable. Tickets received after the first day of validity are refundable if canceled and stamped “not-used” by a railway official, at the station of departure. These tickets are refundable up to six months from the last day of validity. All refunds are subject to a 15% cancellation fee. Tickets submitted after the first day of validity, which have not been cancelled, are not refundable.”

If the date of validity of the ticket has passed, you do need to get it stamped as “not used”. However, if you return the tickets before the validity date, then you don’t have to have them stamped. This should be spelled out in the terms & conditions of the documents you received with the tickets (it may be printed on the ticket).

Well girls in India are really unsecured in terms of physical security. Though I still feel that girls are more safe in paces like Mumbai and Pune than North India. Being from north India I have seen the drastic difference in the security issues of girls here in Pune and North. The condition over there is pathetic. Coming back to the point, girls must be taught measures of self defence like karate(though a difficult task to achieve), they must carry with them pepper spray, which is somewhat safe.
Government must beef up police presence and there should be female constables as well. Government should also make strong and tough decisions while handling cases such as rapes and molestation, so that people have a sense of fear. Though to eradicate the problem one must work at the grass root level i.e. Imbibe moral values and strong interpersonal ethics, which is again a difficult feat to achieve.

‘Air India’s problem is, it’s like a woman with 1000 husbands’?

‘Air India’s problem is, it’s like a woman with 1000 husbands’

Interviews with more than a dozen experienced pilots hired in the last three years India to work new international routes describe an airline with problems.

But theirs are not the only complaints. Passengershave abandoned Air India in droves, shunning the airline because of its reputation for poor customer service and late flights. Formerly this nation’s monopoly carrier, Air India has been surpassed commercial Indian airlines — Jet Airways, Kingfisher and IndiGo — among those that have sprung up since India deregulated the domestic industry nearly two decades ago. Air India now has less than 15 per cent of India’s domestic air travel market, with many empty seats on the flights that do take off.

As a result, Air India lost more than $1 billion in taxpayer money in the last fiscal year. And now there is a growing public clamour for the government to get out of the airline business.

Spokesmen for Air India defend the airline as safe and say it is working to correct its problems. And the nation’s new civil aviation minister, Vayalar Ravi, vowed in an interview on Wednesday not to close or sell the airline. “There is no question of Air India being shut or privatised,” he said.

Hesaid vested interests who “want to exploit the people for their own profit” were behind suggestions that India’s government give the airline up.

Still, Ravi said the airline had been mismanaged in the past — including the merging in 2007 of India’s domestic and international state-run airlines. “Nothing positive came out of the merger,” he said, and Air India has bought too many planes.

But the airline does “not make any compromises with maintenance and security,” Ravi said.

Air India’s image was not helped recent10-day pilots’ strike over salaries. It ended with a government pledge to raise pay — but not before the work stoppage had caused cancellation of nearly 1,500 flights and added almost $50 million to Air India’s mounting losses.

Hoping to win back customers, Air India is slashing fares and planning to expand, even though it loses money on 95 per cent of its flights. Analysts say the prospect of a fare war threatens to destabilise the entire Indian airline industry and to erase the previous predictions carriers of profits this year. Government control

Even inside the company, some executives are quietly calling for the end of government control. But Air India is popular with India’s central government because ministers and politicians can demand routes to connect their home states with the capital, New Delhi, even if they lose money. “I feel like a woman with 1,000 husbands,” one male Air India executive complained, referringto the constant demands from government officials.

Airlines here responded to the shortage expatriates, including hundreds from the United States, where — until the rules changed in 2007 — commercial pilots were forced to retire at age 60. In India, as most everywhere else, the retirement age has long been 65.

For many of those who joined Air India, the culture clash has been severe. Dozens left before their three-year contracts expired. Of the 186 foreign pilots hired since April 2007, Air India has just 36 left, the company said.

Air India, with its subsidiary, Air India Express, has about 1,600 pilots and a fleet of more than 120 aircraft making more than 300 flights a day. But pilots’ schedules are still made in a giant ledger.

And to accommodate high-ranking captains, last-minute schedule revisions are so frequent that some pilots call the practice ‘schedule call.’ An Air India spokesman in Mumbai, K Swaminathan, confirmedthat the company’s rosters were not yet computerised and that changes were often made But he denied that the scheduling system created safety issues.

Air India was free of major accidents for a decade — until a May 2010 crash in Mangalore that killed 158 people. The captain, a Serbian, came into the landing too high and did not abort it when he should have, the Indian government’s investigation report said. The co-pilot, the report found, “failed to challenge any of the captain’s errors.” Just four days later, Air India had another serious incident, when a co-pilot, while adjusting his seat, accidentally knocked the co

Call up the Hotel beforehand to book your place. There are other hotels near GRT Grand. Google them up.

Take a pre-paid taxi from the airport to the hotel. It is safe. Just give the name of the hotel to the driver and he should take you there.
Alternatively ask the hotel to send a pick up car. The driver will have a name placard and will pick you up.

Have a nice stay in Chennai. Don’t forget to visit the Marina beach in the evenings.

If your phone is GSM it has the account identified by the SIM card. In the U.S. Major GSM carriers are AT&T and T-mobile. If it is CDMA there is no SIM card. CDMA carriers include Sprint, Verizon, Alltel, and PCS Metro.
If you have a GSM phone and visit India, it MIGHT be possible to buy a SIM card for local prepaid service and use that in India in your present phone without having to buy a new phone. When you remove your present SIM protect it carefully. If it gets lost, notify your carrier immediately.

Will this work? U.S. And Canada carriers use 1900MHz and 800MHz bands. In India they use 1800MHz and 900MHz. If your phone is quad band it can find and use the right band. If it is tri-band it will find the 1800MHz PCS band(which is mostly used) but it won’t connect to 900 MHz cellular band (which isn’t used as much anyway). If it’s a dual band 800/1900 phone it can’t connect to either 900 or 1800.

However, your phone would also need to be unlocked. If you got your phone “free” on contract with your carrier, it is probably locked to that carrier’s SIM. It would not work with another carrier’s SIM unless you enter the right code to unlock it.

Hi,

You’re welcome here .. It would be a nice experience of a different culture..

Let me answer your questions in sequence:

1. Budget. Airfare would be $1000 as it is peak season. Rest of the amount depends on how long you wanna stay and what type of accommodation. Considering you are foreigners and teenagers, from safety point of view at least Rs.2000-3000 per day would be good.

2 Book rail tickets online at irctc.co.in .Dont stand in queues. They are quite long here and crowded places where people will kinda stare at foreigners fr long hours and make you uncomfortable. So online is best and it is the railway’s own website not a travel agent. There may be tickets available on waiting list if you are late to book your ticket. If your railway travels are on short notice, there is “Tatkal Quota” available from 2 days before travel (you have to be quick to book it as soon as it opens. About travelling in Taxis, yes rarely some of them are perverts.. So if you get suspicious ask them to stop.. Rather tell them before your board that not to make make any unexpected stops in between. IF they agree you can get on.

3. Best places to go.. You decide what suits your taste.. I live in Mumbai and this is urban.. India has huge diversity .. Very urban to very rural and lts of religious sites.. Check out the list at incredibleindia.org which is a govt. Tourism site.

4. Buy a prepaid phone as soon as u arrive. Its quite cheap here.. And call rates too are extremely cheap.. Make sure about what i said taxi thing. No unexpected stops.. Carry a map of each place you travel and make sure he takes you by right route.. Dont ask for directions to stranger men, women would be safer..

Well there are lots more i could go on typing.. But let me know if ya need to know anything specific.. GL
